Ashtanga Yoga in St. Paul
David Rogers, Ashtanga Yoga Teacher
3 AUGUST 2018
What’s special about a ‘Mysore-style’ class? Well, as a beginner, you get a great deal of individual attention from the teacher, who guides you through each step of each posture. Your first class will last about 30 minutes as you learn the Sun Salutations and finish with a relaxing breathing technique. You get to go at your own pace, and you never feel pressure to “keep up” with someone else.
Over your next few classes, David will introduce you to more postures. You will start to learn more about your own body, and gain more independence in your practice as you learn and remember more of the Ashtanga series of postures. After a year of consistent practice, your class at the Shala will probably last anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes. Because David asks you to do the series from memory, you will be able to do your practice pretty much anywhere – when you travel, or if you do not have time to make it into the Shala. It’s your practice!
In the end, those are the two things that make the Mysore method of Ashtanga Yoga so special: one-on-one attention from the teacher, and a practice that you get to make your own.
